Pathways to College Student Success

Supporting high school students who will be first-generation college students

About one third of first generation college students leave college without a degree. That is why choosing the right college, knowing where to get help, and building a support system early really matters.

How can this site support me?

Are you a high school senior who will be a first-generation college student (FGCS) next year? First-generation means that your parent(s) have not earned a bachelor's degree.

If so, then this site is designed just for you.It will guide you through college planning during your senior year, help you choose a college that best fits your needs, and show you how to access campus resources that support you throughout your college career.

Being the first....

Being the first in your family to go to college is a big achievement. It also means you are learning how college works without a built-in guide (your family). Many rules, expectations, and resources are not always explained, it is assumed you know.

First-generation students often juggle school, work, finances, and family responsibilities, while feeling pressure to succeed for themselves and their families. Needing support does not mean you are unprepared. It means the system was not designed with your experience in mind. With the right tools and preparation, you can succeed!

Words of wisdom from first-gen students

"Don't think that one setback can define you. There are always plenty of options and different routes. It is okay to make mistakes."

Empty Chairs in Lecture Room

"I know it's scary right now... but there are resources made just for you. Every time I've struggled in college and thought, I can't do this anymore, I found a way!"

Teamwork

"There are staff members that care for you, and they understand the struggle. Do your due diligence, look for them, and don't be scared to advocate for yourself."

Desert Road

"Keep going. Remember, you're doing this for a reason. Whatever is in your way, know once you get past that finish line, you're going to look back like, Wow. I did it despite all of those things. "
